Bangladesh won the first Test of the two-match series in Rawalpindi on Sunday, with a thrilling final day triumph over Pakistan.
Bangladesh created history by winning their first Test against Pakistan by 10 wickets in the series’ opening match.
According to the ICC, this milestone victory occurred after 14 games with Pakistan, during which the Tigers endured 12 defeats and only one draw. Following this victory, India and South Africa are the only teams Bangladesh has yet to defeat in Test cricket.
This victory also gave Bangladesh a big lift in the ICC World Test Championship standings, propelling them over Pakistan and South Africa to sixth place, level with Sri Lanka (40%). As a result of the loss, Pakistan dropped to ninth position, with a 30.56% point percentage.
The match may have had a slow start due to a soggy outfield, but by the fifth day, it had changed into an exciting thriller. Despite having only 41 overs available on the opening day, Bangladesh got off to a solid start, taking four key wickets.
On Day 2, Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel both scored centuries to save their teams. Rizwan was extremely resilient, scoring an undefeated 171 in a lengthy innings that left him cramping at the end of the day. Pakistan declared their innings at 448/6, hoping to force a result.
Mushfiqur Rahim (191) and Shadnam Islam (93) were Bangladesh’s notable performers, forcing Pakistan to spend much of Day 4 on the pitch. Both came agonisingly near to major milestones but fell just short.Starting Day 5 at 23/1, Pakistan collapsed, being bowled out for 146, with only Rizwan providing resistance with a fighting half-century. Bangladesh’s spinners stole the show, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz claiming four wickets and Shakib Al Hasan another three.
According to the ICC, the Tigers needed only 30 runs to secure a historic victory, which they did in under seven overs without losing any wickets.
