Srinagar, Jan 23: Chilla-i-Kalan, the 40-day period of harsh winter in Kashmir, is set to end on a dry note, with no major weather activity forecast until the end of January, while Jammu and Kashmir experienced an 81% rainfall deficit in the first three weeks of 2025.
The Director Meteorological Department (MeT) has projected largely dry and gloomy weather until January 31. However, he warned that there is a chance of light rain and snow in isolated areas on January 23 and between January 29 and 30.
According to available data, J&K has recorded an 81% deficit in rainfall as of today (January 22), compared to the typical precipitation of 60.5 mm.
The Union Territory has recorded only 11.4 mm of rainfall, with Kathua having the largest deficiency at 98% from January 1 to 22nd.Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital, has reported a 71% rainfall deficit, while Shopian has the second greatest deficit at 94%. Reasi, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Jammu, and Doda all had deficient rainfall of 90% or more throughout the time, while Udhampur, Samba, and Ramban had deficit precipitation of more than 80% on 22 days.
The statistics revealed that Anantnag and Pulwama districts in South Kashmir had a 77% and 75% rainfall deficit, respectively, while Budgam, Bandipora, and Rajouri had 69%, 63%, and 64% deficits, respectively.
