Srinagar, April 22: An apparent technical issue on the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) website caused confusion in Kashmir when a Budgam girl’s JEE (Main) result initially showed a 99.84 percentile but later altered to 73.28 %, stunning her family and coaching centre.
The disparity created havoc for both the student’s family and the SKIE coaching institute in Srinagar, where she was enrolled. The student and her parents had come to the institute and presented a PDF of the results, which showed the 99.84 percentile.
The family, pleased with the performance, distributed candy. Later, the coaching institute placed adverts in local media complimenting the student on her apparent accomplishment. Several media sites even reported success stories based on the initial results.
Dr Saddam, Chairman of SKIE Classes Srinagar, stated that the girl, accompanied by her parents, had come to their office and submitted a PDF of her marksheet as confirmation of her results. Her parents even donated sweets to us, and based on the results revealed at the time, we assumed it was genuine and sent out celebratory advertisements to local media.
“Some publications even featured success stories,” he explained. He stated that on Monday, they received calls from individuals who questioned the veracity of the student’s score.
We quickly called the student and her family, who insisted on the accuracy of the results and provided screenshots from the official website to back up their claims.
“The student was clearly distressed.” “When we rechecked the result ourselves, the website displayed’record not available’. “We informed the student, and she claimed she had verified it again,” Dr Saddam explained.
He went on to say that certain people were aiming to harm their institute’s reputation without justification. When we rechecked the result, the website displayed’record not available’. “We informed the student, and she claimed she had verified it again,” Dr Saddam explained. He went on to say that certain people were aiming to harm their institute’s reputation without justification.
“Why would we alter any outcome? We’ve been doing this for 25 years, and every year, thousands of our pupils pass the JEE. We don’t know what went wrong—it could have been a technical glitch or anything else,” Dr Saddam explained.Meanwhile, the student’s family stated that the mistake was solely the consequence of a technical error.
They have contacted the NTA to seek clarification on the matter.
Dabirah Hassan, the student’s sister, revealed that the family checked the NTA website on Sunday and found the result to be 99.84 percentile. “We told her lecturers at SKIE Srinagar, rejoiced, and the institute ran advertisements based on the result. But now the result is 73.28 percentile,” she explained.
Dabirah also stated that they have documented evidence, including screenshots of the previous result and records of the “record not available” notice that occurred afterward. This inconsistency jeopardises a student’s professional future. My sister took the exam last year and scored approximately 84 percentiles.
“The same website now shows only a 6 percentile for that attempt, indicating a clear error,” she explained.
The family has written to the NTA for an official explanation. Until an answer is produced, the dispute raises severe concerns about the transparency and technological trustworthiness of the country’s high-stakes examination outcomes.
Dabirah stated that they have sent an email to NTA regarding the matter and are awaiting their response to. We hope to receive a response from the NTA, she continued.Meanwhile, despite numerous attempts, the NTA made no reaction to the situation.
The story will be updated once the NTA’s response has been received. The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Session 2 Result 2025 was made available on the NTA’s official website on Saturday, April 19.
This year, a total of 9,92,350 candidates took the exam, including 6,81,871 women and 3,10,479 men. (RK)
