Srinagar, May 4: Following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 25 tourists and one local resident, Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched an intensified crackdown across the Valley, targeting Over Ground Workers (OGWs), sympathisers, and individuals with a “inimical mindset.
The measure is part of a broader counter-terrorism policy, and it will be intensified further.
According to V K Birdi, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, at least 90 people have been charged under the strict Public Safety Act (PSA), while 2,800 suspected OGWs have been apprehended for questioning or preventative custody. So far, 90 persons have been booked under the PSA in various regions of Kashmir,” V K Birdi told Greater Kashmir. “Up to 2,800 OGWs have also been apprehended.
The crackdown on OGWs and persons with hostile attitudes will be stepped up further in the coming days. The police move came days after a brutal terrorist attack on a tourist in Anantnag district’s Pahalgam area, which killed 25 tourists and one local.
The attack has sparked considerable outrage and fear over a return of terrorist actions against civilians in Kashmir.Another top police officer stated that many searches had been carried out on the homes of terrorists and their associates throughout Kashmir.
Those involved will not be spared at any cost,” the officer stated. “The operations are broad-based and involves joint teams of J&K Police, CRPF, and Army.”He stated that surveillance has been greatly increased, particularly in vulnerable regions and suspected terrorist pathways.
“We have increased the use of drones, night-vision surveillance, and human intelligence inputs to keep track of suspects,” a police officer said.According to security sources, cordon-and-search operations (CASOs) are being carried out on a regular basis in various parts of Kashmir. “Area domination patrols have been increased and security forces are maintaining a high level of alert,” a government source disclosed. “Checkpoints have been erected at key intersections, and mobile phone surveillance is also being used to track movement and communication between suspects.”
Every factor that threatens peace and public safety will face severe consequences. There will be no compromises.Police have also asked the general population to be watchful and report any suspicious activities.
“Public cooperation is critical in defeating the nefarious plans of terrorists and their supporters,” the senior police officer said, adding that no innocent people are being harassed. The Pahalgam attack was one of the bloodiest attacks on civilians in recent years.
Security experts believe that targeting tourists is a planned strategy aimed at damaging the tourism renaissance in Kashmir, which has experienced record footfalls in recent months.
