Kolkata — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced Wednesday that the Waqf (Amendment) Act will not be implemented in the state.
Ms Banerjee, speaking at a Jain community activity in Kolkata, stated that she will defend minority people and property.
“I understand you are upset because of the Waqf Act. “Have faith; nothing will happen in Bengal to divide and rule,” she remarked. “Observe the situation in Bangladesh.
“This (Waqf Bill) should not have been passed now,” Ms Banerjee stated. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha, which does not have a BJD member, on Thursday and by the Rajya Sabha in the early hours of Friday, following long deliberations in both Houses of Parliament.
President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Bill on Saturday. — (PTI)
